The first Pictures of the Year contest in Latin America is being held in Quito, Ecuador all this week. Check out the site for a list of winners in 18 categories - singles and essays on migration, portraits, sports, daily life singles and stories, multimedia, photographer of the year and "our vision" - some of the best work by Latin American photographers and photographers based in Latin America from 2009 - 2010. Judges are: Ruth Eichhorn (Germany) director of photography of Geo group, Melissa Farlow (USA) freelancer who has worked for National Geographic for more than 15 years, Claudi Carreras Guillen (Spain) University of Barcelona, Francisco MAta Rosas (Mexico) Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana unidad Cuajimalpa, Walter Astrada (Argentina) who has worked for La Nacion, Argentina, AP and Getty images and whose work has been awarded by World Press Photo numerous times.

Went to the World Press Photo exhibit(of the winning photos from the 2010 contest) in Quito's Centro Cultural Metropolitano. Amidst the light and the space of the museum's atrium, the photos - printed to the size of substantial windows - spoke powerfully and beautifully of war, mother earth and everyday life...
