A Tribute to Snow

Some shots from winter break outside Buffalo...a couple things I found in abundance were time and snow.

 

Snow or shine (rarely shine in a western new york winter).

Mountains of snow accumulated in parking lots; mainstreet in williamsville new york.

Buffalo hosts an impressive force of snowplows.  

locals and regional visitors enjoy cross country trails in Colden (the snow capital 

of Western New York); the area receives on average 180 inches of snowfall annually.

Ready to fight for birdseed.  

 

A creek testifies to Western New York's unique weather situation.  

Its location along Lake Erie causes the region to be more temperate than other Northern 

states while, at the same time, providing record amounts of snow (the notorious "lake effect").

Frost and, finally...sun.

Lighting up Cornfields

Afterthought and Light Pollution; a wintering corn field in Clarence New York.

I went out one evening with my good friend Sheider to try out some lighting techniques 

from this pst semester. With two flashes, a tripod, and a flashlight we spent a couple hours

 in rural clarence, driving down creepy roads and romping around muddy corn fields.

Holiday Travel and lake effect snow in Buffalo...a self-portrait of hobo-me and a bed of sweaters was my best attempt at making lemonade.

Hazel Kinder's Lighthouse Theater

Larry and Laural Power, volunteers at the Lighthouse Theater, have known Hazel since she was a child. Hazel shares a close relationship with her volunteers and performers alike. This couple is part of a portrait series done for the project of the many faces of the theater. Enjoy!

Multiple Flash

Laura Draffen and "Zinny" dance salsa Wednesday night at the Artisan. Mainly club dancers, the couple began dancing four and a half years ago when locales in Columbia started to host Latin Dance nights.

I liked the hands in the picture; that's all. I had mostly problems of aiming my flash (I'm clumsy with a monopod!) and getting the focus just right. I did, however, find it easier to shoot this situation than I had during the Single Flash Assignment.

This one's been around for a while; but it's one of my favorites. For those of you who haven't seen Luis Sinco's Marlboro Marine (featured on Media Storm for the past year), it's definately worth a few minute's of your time.

I find the piece a good follow-up to Sinco's leading image (which on its own became iconic of the war in Iraq).  He later delved into this Marine's life and post-duty experience; an honest and provoking portrait of both an individual and an issue much larger than himself.
